Teeth cleaning and polishing at home
Gum disease is the most common problem we find in older adults. A thorough clean is often the single most useful thing we can do.

What's involved
We remove hardened tartar above and below the gumline with hand and ultrasonic scalers, then polish to remove staining. Sore or inflamed gums usually settle within a week or two.
For patients who can't tolerate a long session, we split the clean across two short visits.
Why it matters more as we age
Bacteria from gum disease are linked to chest infections, and to poorer control of diabetes and heart conditions. For someone frail, a clean mouth is a health measure, not a cosmetic one.
Carers and staff
We show carers how to clean the patient's teeth or dentures day to day, and include this in the written care plan.
Common questions
Does it hurt?
It can be sensitive if the gums are inflamed. We work gently, take breaks, and can use local anaesthetic if needed.
How often should it be done?
Every six months is typical; more often for patients who can't brush well themselves.
